The Veterinary Assistant/Receptionist 
program provides comprehensive 
training designed to prepare the 
student for a career in the field of 
animal care, including specialized 
skills in veterinary nursing as well 
as receptionist skills for the 
veterinary office and animal care 
environment.

Course Outlines

Forty-three (43) weeks of classroom 
training will be offered at the 
LeMarchant Rd. campus of Lawrence 
College, and will include the 
following course training:

Small Animal Health

This subject is designed to provide 
students with an understanding of 
all areas of pet care and pet health 
management.  Topics discussed will 
include Dentistry, Toxicology, Cat & 
Dog Breeds, Exotic Animals, Parasitology 
& Zoonoses, and Infectious Diseases and 
Control.

Small Animal Nursing

This subject is designed to familiarize 
students with all areas of nursing and 
surgical procedures and preparation.  
Topics covered include First Aid, 
Euthanasia, Anaesthesia, Pharmacology, 
Surgical Nursing and Procedures, Sterile 
Techniques, Handling and Restraint, 
General Blood Work Theory, and Skeletal 
Anatomy & Radiology

Small Animal Nutrition

This subject is designed to provide 
students with an understanding of small 
animal nutritional requirements for 
general health needs and for special 
medical diet needs.  Topics covered 
include Balanced Diet Planning, Clinical 
Small Animal Nutrition, Basic Guide to 
Nutrient Requirements, and Digestion, 
Absorption and Dietary Balance.

Small Animal Behaviour

This subject is designed to provide 
students with an understanding of 
behavioural problems in animals and 
why they occur. Topics discussed include 
the Human-Animal Bond, Aggressive 
Behaviour, Fear and Emotional Reactions, 
Sexual Behaviour Problems, Maternal 
Behaviour Problems, and Feeding and 
Related Problems

Veterinary Receptionist Procedures

This subject provides the student with 
specialized training in receptionist 
skills for the veterinary and animal 
care environments. Topics covered will 
include specialized areas of patient 
handling and pet owner reception. 

Office Procedures

This subject examines the role and duties 
of the Receptionist in the modern office 
environment.  Topics covered include 
effective time management and work 
organization, filing methods and records 
management, effective use of the telephone 
and other tele-communications, postal 
services and mail processing.


Psychology for Work	

This subject explores social-behavioural 
topics for the workplace including 
employer/employee expectations, effective 
working relationships, office ethics, and 
strategies for workplace success.

Keyboarding

This subject is designed to provide 
training in alpha-numeric keyboard 
operation and an introduction to word 
processing software.

Medical Terminology

This subject is designed to introduce 
students to the meanings, correct 
pronunciation and spelling of medical 
terms for the veterinary care field.

WordPerfect for Windows

Students learn the principles and 
techniques of WordPerfect 6.1 for 
Windows and their application to the 
production of business documents.  
Commands, menus, cursor movements, 
reveal codes, program defaults, the 
speller and thesaurus, and the Help 
feature are introduced.  Students learn 
how to key, save, exit, retrieve, and 
print documents as well as delete, 
move, edit, and copy text. Tabs, 
indents, and various line and page 
formatting techniques are also used 
in the production process. The 
following business documents are 
formatted using the various features 
of WordPerfect:  full-block letters, 
modified-block letters, personal 
business letters, and one- and two-page 
bound and unbound reports.

Record keeping

This subject explores the application 
and importance of effective Record 
keeping for the modern office 
environment.  Topics covered include 
banking records, reconciliations, 
payroll records, and petty cash control.
 
dBase V

The concepts of database management 
are applied within the parameters of 
the dBase V software program. Students 
are introduced to the major objectives 
of a database and learn how to use 
dBase V applications to develop a 
logical database design.  Databases 
are created, saved, and modified; 
records are entered, retrieved, added, 
modified, deleted, and listed; and 
information entered in the database 
structures is sorted, indexed, and 
printed.


Classroom training is supplemented 
with eight (8) weeks On-The-Job 
Training designed to provide the 
student with hands on work experience 
and practical training.
